That expression as of a stony cliff
looking out over the vast plain of hurt
is but survival mask of tenderness
that will not quit but requires a disguise

living closer, looking closer, reveals
the terror of a fine sensitivity
that knows agony's delicate tendrils,
each with its own message of disturbance
