Mourning Deferred

Loss can be frozen so as yet ungrieved,
bulk of inner glacier, holding, hiding,
not just the one lost, also the one left
as they were parted, inseparable

so many paths closed, hopes foreclosed,
no way to let go, no way to let come,
so the one left is bereft of themself,
unable to meet the beyond of dream

a person can be frozen in a flash,
lastingly held prisoner without will,
and yet melting can come, bringing a pain
that is worse for having waited so long

mourning deferred collects cold interest,
ice cracks as old agony now comes true
