Habitat

Habitat habit, blank fortress of comfort
whose arithmetick exiles all surprise
in the name of what is accustomed numb,
keeping in and keeping out both at once

habit, absence in presence, two melded
to make a barrier, hard to challenge
because not quite visible, a denial
that maintains its deniability

"I do this this way because I've always
done it this way to make my way to 'me',
why disrupt what operates so smoothly
and precludes the terror of invention?"

I inhabit "me" habitually
struck with sudden jolts, bolts of breakaway

pitfalls and promise  of a community effort to build a school
that emphasizes helping students rule and reward themselves 
in the quest to learn themselves as they learn.
