perhaps even the most accessible,
indignity of loss reminds the heart
we are but paltry things in a short span

war that is abomination shatters hearts
no matter how they learn to make believe;
a child's starvation is a simple thing,
the horror is in its simplicity

a heart that does not break has no true beat
can never master night of rage or greed,
the fierce idiocy of enmity,
when vulnerability makes all one

heartbreak can move the heart to wake and seek
the humble compromise that's balm of peace
